FAQs

Looking to volunteer? Learn more here!

I have an emergency -- Can I call you directly for assistance?
If you believe you are experiencing a medical emergency, PLEASE CALL 911, even if you know one of our volunteers! Emergency Dispatch Personnel will take critical information, and contact appropriate response personnel, including the Mendham First Aid Squad, local police and fire resources, even Advanced Life Support (ALS) personnel (aka Paramedics). We, along with other first responders, will then be better prepared to respond to your situation, and the dispatch personnel may be able to provide you with critical life-saving information (if needed) in the interim.
Aren’t you part of the fire department?
In 2004 the Mendham First Aid Squad became an independent organization. We still work very closely and support the Mendham Fire Department in many of their activities, but manage ourselves and our fund-raising activities independently.

You can learn more about the history of the Mendham First Aid Squad here.
Do you bill for emergency services?
No. The Mendham First Aid Squad does not bill for our services at this time, although other organizations such as Advanced Life Support (ALS) and hospital services (provided through Atlantic Health and other organizations) may bill you or your insurance agency separately. Any questions regarding such bills and fees should be directed to those organizations.
How can I make a donation to the squad?
You can find that information here! Donation checks (made out to Mendham First Aid) may be sent to PO Box 131, Mendham NJ 07945, or dropped off in-person on Sundays between 10 and 11 a.m. at the First Aid Squad headquarters located at 24 East Main Street in Mendham Borough.

You can also make donations while shopping at Kings Supermarket – just look for the donation bin at the checkout counters.
What are my donations used for?
While the Borough funds many aspects of our operating budget through your tax dollars, we still rely significantly upon donations to fund various squad activities and provide necessary items to the squad that are not allocated in the Borough of Mendham budget.
What is the “File of Life” or Medical Profile Wallet card?
The “File of Life” (sometimes referred to as “Vial of Life”) and Medical Profile Wallet cards are simple forms for your home or person, listing critical medical information often requested during emergency interventions, such as allergies, medical history, current prescriptions, and emergency contacts.  We are happy to provide these to all our residents upon request at no charge.

How can I get more copies of your File of Life or Medical Profile Wallet cards?
Just ask us! Contact us through this website, or stop by our headquarters any Sunday morning between 10 and 11a.m. We’re more than happy to provide you with additional copies, so that you can provide them for other family members (even if they don’t live in the area, as these benefit ANY emergency situation), or if you just want a new copy to update your own information with recent changes.
What locations do you cover?
While our volunteers primarily serve the residents and visitors 1of Mendham Borough, we also have mutual aid agreements with Mendham Township, Chester Borough, and Randolph Township, among others in Somerset County as well. Additionally, we are prepared to support any county-wide, state-wide, or national emergency as part of our government's National Emergency Preparedness plans.
Why did the police show up when I called for an ambulance?
The Mendham Borough or Township police are always dispatched concurrently. This is common in Morris County. They are there to ensure the safety of our members.
What hospitals do you transport to?
It is our patients' right and our obligation to transport our patients to the closest, most appropriate medical facility to handle their illness or injury. Typically, this means we will transport patients to Morristown Medical Center (a Level 1 Trauma Center), even if the patients physician of choice is located elsewhere.
Can you support our community event (race, sporting event, fundraising activity, etc.)?
We are always happy to provide support when we have available volunteers to do so. Please contact us through this website with your request at the earliest time, so we can discuss coverage with our squad volunteers.  Please note that we may be unable to commit to out-of-town events, as our first priority is to provide emergency services coverage to the local community.
We’d like to get training for our scout troop/community organization. Can you help?
We are more than happy to provide or help facilitate training for community organizations. Please contact us through this website with your request at the earliest timeframe, so we can discuss coverage with our squad volunteers.
Can you help with transportation for a medical procedure (Dialysis, etc.)?
Regrettably, no.  While we provide care and transportation for those persons requiring emergency services, we are not in a position to provide transport for routine or scheduled medical procedures.

Residents may be eligible for transportation services offered through Mendham Area Senior Housing (MASH), and there are a number of commercial transport firms that serve the Mendham area which can be contracted for this type of service.
An emergency vehicle with red lights/sirens is approaching my vehicle. What should I do?
Vehicles in either direction are required by law to immediately pull to the right edge of the roadway and come to a full and complete stop. This clears the roadway and allows the emergency vehicle(s) to safely and quickly continue its response. Please avoid stopping at the top of a hill or on a blind curve, and when you pull over keep in mind that there may be more than one emergency vehicle.

Additionally, volunteer chief officers of First Aid Squads (and Fire Departments) may also be issued permits by the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (in consultation with other municipal authorities) to display flashing red lights/sirens in or on their personal vehicles to identify themselves when responding to emergencies.
What if I see a vehicle with flashing blue lights?
In New Jersey, volunteer members of First Aid Squads (and Fire Departments) may be issued permits by the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (in consultation with other municipal authorities) to display flashing blue lights in or on their personal vehicles to identify themselves when responding to emergencies. While these blue lights do not grant our volunteers any privileges not otherwise afforded to other drivers, YOU ARE REQUIRED BY LAW pursuant to N.J.S.A 39:4-82 to yield the right of way to these vehicles so that our volunteers can continue answering someone's emergency call.
I sometimes see an SUV or another ambulance following your ambulance, what is that?
Frequently the First Aid Squad utilizes a system known at Advance Life Support (ALS). ALS consists of two licensed MICU Paramedics that carry all sorts of life saving medicine and equipment that exceeds the BLS capabilities of the First Aid Squad. The primary ALS units for Mendham are provided by Atlantic Health System based out of Morristown Medical Center.
